Book of the Month

The Voice of the Butterfly - John Nichols's, the author of The Milagro Beanfield War,
brings his vintage wit to the absurdities of modern life being challenged by an environmental
butterfly liberation movement . When Suicide City's new highway bypass threatens
the home of an exquisitely obscure butterfly, aging '60s radical and continuing
proponent of losing battles Charley McFarland rallies an off-the-rails band
of misfits to help fight the powers that be. Tthis time on behalf of the Rocky
Mountain phistic copper butterfly. A dark comedy of ideals and unlikely heroes.

McFarland's dysfunctional, yet oddly grace-filled Butterfly Coalition had me
laughing out loud. It made me aware once again of what activists can
accomplish, usually despite ourselves. As with Milagro, Nichols empowers us with a
heady mix of politics and humor, a tonic needed in these times. You can check it
out and order a copy at

Movie of the Month

Check out this great film "Liberty Bound" by Christine Rose, the newesy member of our
group. The film features Howard Zinn, Michael Parenti, Michael Ruppert & citizens
whose basic rights have been threatened but who never give up.

She produced, wrote and directed this film traveling the country by train, bus
and car. It provides a compelling picture of the political reality of 9/11and
asks all the right questions. Please get a copy and show it to all your

"What the Bleep!". A phenomenal film about how we are the creators of our reality
and how we perceive existence, from Quantum physics to laughter, from self discovery
to neuro transmittors, from cellular receptivity to seeing where our thoughts, past memories
and perceptions influence our body and emotions. A personal story is also weaved into
scientific accounts ... very fascinating. It is playing this week at the Metron...maybe only
to Friday. Yes, go an see it if you like to stretch your mind and open up to possibilities!
SF Metreon (415) 369-6201 - Eva Ariela Lindberg

A new 42 minute documentary & activist tool about authentic patriotism and protecting
First Amendment rights against the Bush administration's attempt to discredit dissent
and limit free speech.

I saw the Movie "What the Bleep!" Eva Lindberg said, "it is a phenomenal
film about how we are the creators of our reality and how we perceive existence,
from Quantum physics to laughter, from self discovery to neuro transmittors,
from cellular receptivity to seeing where our thoughts, past memories and
perceptions influence our body and emotions."

It is somewhat similar to the movie The Butterfly Effect, that we not only
cocreate our present reality, but the future as well and quite possibly the
past. The power of conscious intention, as depicted in this film, is just
incredible!! That's why the belief that "a butterfly can, with a flap of its wings,
change the world and that the ripple it sends out can spawn a hurricane" is the
very essence of our network's philosophy. Alan

The refusal to allow Singer Yusuf Islam, formerly known as Cat Stevens,
into the United States on national security grounds was a "slap in the face of
sanity," a Muslim group has said.

Dave Matthews ponders big tours, butterflies and doing what a rock star should.
After talking to Rainforest Action's Paul West at the Power to the People Concert on
Saturday, September 11th about a benefit concert for the butterflies and rainforests, I met
with Dennis Kucinich and Michael Franti backstage and asked Michael if he
would do a benefit concert with Dave Matthews for the Butterfly Gardeners
Association, Musicians for Peace and Rainforest Action. He said he would love
to. I met with Dave's manager Patrick at the concert in Golden Gate Park on
Sunday and gave him a copy of our CD for Dave, but forgot to ask him about our
benefit. After we have a meeting at Rainforest Action's office in San
Francisco, we will have more to report on this proposal. If you would like to
volunteer to help make this event happen, please contact me at

Please tell your friends, family and neighbors to stop Prop 64.

Fr. Oct. 1 7-10 pm Past Life Workshop to Benefit SIDS - Benicia

Certified hypnotherapist, Gayla Reiter will lead participants through a
hypnotic group regression to explore past lives. Proceeds of the workshop benefit
Sudden Infant Death Syndrome services in the Northern California area.

According to Ms. Reiter, "the regression experience often serves as a
powerful catalyst for recognizing themes and karmic patterns in relationships,
career, and areas of current life difficulties (such as health challenges, phobias,
habit patterns, fears, etc.). The process empowers participants to bring
subconscious "instincts" or motivating forces to the conscious level where they
can be analyzed and a conscious choice may be made. A group discussion following
the regression allows participants to more fully integrate the information
obtained. Reading lists will also be distributed.

Ms. Reiter is a minister, author and certified hypnotherapist. She has
appeared on scores of television and radio programs including the Joan Rivers Show
and CBS's People are Talking.

Location: 240 Baker St., Benicia
Cost: $35 and pre-registration is required.

Sun. Oct. 3 3-6 pm Benefit for America Coming Together - Mill Valley

Want to do something to make a difference in the upcoming election? Come to
our FUNdraising event.

America Coming Together is the largest voter mobilization project in American
history. Knocking on doors and listening to voters' concerns, ACT canvassers
are laying the groundwork to defeat George W. Bush and elect Democrats in
federal, state, and local elections in 2004. The Swing State Project targets the
17 'battleground' states - the states where the election will be decided - with
a well organized, grassroots 'get out the vote' effort.

In 2000, the Presidency was decided by razor thin margins in 17 states. This
is still a 50-50 nation, just as it was in 2000. Once again, these 17 states
will decide the election and frame the issues debate for races at every level.
With your help, we can propel progressive candidates to victory! Want more

Her soaring vocals convey a mystical wisdom that transcends cultural boundaries.

knowing that the energy of God is invested in the Names, and once you feel
it, once you taste the nectar, nothing else in the universe will satisfy your

Call Congress to fire Rumsfeld

In the weeks since the world first saw the horrible photos from Abu Ghraib,
Donald Rumsfeld and the rest of the Pentagon's senior leadership has come
before Congress to "accept responsibility" for the scandal. But President Bush has
a strange idea of accountability - instead of asking for Rumsfeld's
resignation, he's praised him for doing a "superb job".

Your Congresspeople are home from Washington this week, and it's a great
chance to let them know whether you agree with President Bush's opinion of
Secretary Rumsfeld's job performance.

Call your Representative and Senators today, and tell them to demand that
President Bush fire Donald Rumsfeld.

Senator Dianne Feinstein
San Diego, CA: 310-914-7300

Senator Barbara Boxer
Sacramento, CA: 415-403-0100

Congressman George Miller
Vallejo, CA: 925-602-1880

Americans have long believed that there should be consequences when eaders
make bad decisions. Secretary Rumsfeld's decisions about the invasion and its
aftermath led to the crisis that we face today.

General Anthony Zinni, former commander-in-chief of the United States Central
Command and Bush administration special envoy to the Middle East said,

"I blame the civilian leadership of the Pentagon directly. Because if they
were given the responsibility, and if this was their war, and by everything
that I understand, they promoted it and pushed it - certain elements in there
certainly - even to the point of creating their own intelligence to match their
needs, then they should bear the responsibility."

President Bush showed us again that he isn't willing to own up to the
mistakes of his administration and hold people accountable. If he won't, it's up to
us and our elected representatives to do so.

Thanks for making these calls today. - The team

Defend Free Speech - Stop the Attacks on Dr. Hatem Bazian

He is scheduled to speak on Muslims Through the Looking Glass in Palo Alto on
Sunday, April 25 at 6 pm

As Ariel Sharon and George Bush met in the White House, the Muslim American
Society Freedom Foundation, the A.N.S.W.E.R. Coalition, and other organizations
held a press conference, rally and civil disobedience action demanding "Free
Palestine." The Muslim American Society Freedom Foundation initiated today's
action, at which Mahdi Bray, the Executive Director of the MAS Freedom
Foundation, and Sarah Friedman, National Outreach Coordinator for the A.N.S.W.E.R.
Coalition, were arrested on the White House sidewalk in an act of protest against
the Sharon/Bush war on the Palestinian people. When the police blocked the
protest from marching forward on the White House sidewalk, Mahdi Bray refused to
leave and Sarah Friedman stepped forward from the group of assembled
demonstrators and joined him. While they were being arrested, supporters held signs
reading "Ariel Sharon and George Bush are War Criminals" and chanted "Occupation
is a Crime, from Iraq to Palestine." Photos can be viewed at

Dr. Hatem Bazian, a highly respected lecturer at the University of
California, Berkeley in the Near Eastern Studies and Ethnic Studies Departments, is
being victimized by a mean-spirited national right-wing campaign. His just defense
of the Palestinian people and his call to end war and suffering of all in
Iraq are being maliciously portrayed as "incitement of violence and sedition."

Capitalizing on the vicious anti-Arab and anti-Muslim hate fest that is
escalating in the U.S. as the occupation in Iraq erupts, reaching critical stages,
right-wing and racist forces are engaged in attacks designed to seriously
jeopardize the well-being of Arab- and Muslim-Americans - particularly outspoken
community leaders, prominent activists and critical scholars - in an attempt to
completely silence dissent against the violence of occupation. Behind it all
is the racist belief that critical speech and the Bill of Rights come to a
screeching halt at the doorstep of Arab- and Muslim-American homes, thus falsely
positioning them as conspirators within. Popular statements such as "we need
regime change," that are being made daily by many all the way from John Kerry
to progressive activists, are being twisted and presented as "sedition" and
"treason" in a McCarthy-style purge.

Although Arab- and Muslim-Americans are particularly targeted and
scapegoated, the attack on the Bill of Rights and the right to dissent is incrementally
affecting all sectors without exception. The intent is to create a fully
compliant population, criminalize opposition, and expand the political reach of an
ideological right-wing extreme.

Dr. Bazian has been receiving livid hate mail; his work at the University is
being challenged; and extremist elements are threatening his and his family's
well-being. Like millions of Americans and people around the globe, Dr. Bazian
has been an articulate and outspoken critic of U.S. foreign policy - calling
for a U.S. that is at peace with itself and with nations around the world on
the basis of equality and liberty for all.

Hatem was a prominent student leader at San Francisco State University during
the eighties and later at UC Berkeley in the nineties - both are institutions
best known for their legacy of the free speech and anti-war movements. During
his student years, he fully championed the rights of disenfranchised
communities, people of color, supported ethnic, labor and gender studies, and worked
to organize an effective U.S. student movement on a national scale in
opposition to both NAFTA and GATT. Hatem served as Chair of the U.C. Berkeley Graduate
Assembly, and from 1995-1999 was coordinator of the Graduate Minority Students
Project of the Graduate Assembly, through which he spearheaded statewide
efforts to defeat Proposition 209, a 1996 California-wide anti-affirmative action
proposition. Bazian was also active in the anti-Apartheid struggle and Central
American solidarity movements. In 1990, Hatem was the Chair of the National
People of Color Student Coalition and executive member of the Board of the
United States Student Association.

We ask you to take a stand in clear support of free speech and against the
racist criminalization of Arab-Americans, Muslim-Americans and all people
standing against war and occupation. The escalation of rhetoric by President Bush in
conjunction with the increase in military force and attacks on the Iraqi
people will likely give yet another green light for further anti-Arab and
anti-Muslim backlash. We need to take a strong stand now!

Please write to the president of the University of California, Berkeley, at
the following address to ask for protection and support for Dr. Hatem Bazian:

Support Legislation for a U.S. Department of Peace

At this critical time in our nation's history, righteous action is the
antidote to despair. Please participate in a powerful citizen lobbying effort
to create a U.S. Department of Peace, sponsored in the House of
Representatives by Congressman Dennis Kucinich. This bill establishes
nonviolence as an organizing principle of American society, cultivating an
array of peace-building policies and procedures. On April 8th, this historic
legislation will be introduced for a second time; whether or not it becomes
law is dependent on whether we, the people of the United States, take the
time to make phone calls, lobby our Congresspeople, and in other ways create
the political will to make it happen.

Please see to
learn more about our involvement with this bill

The Department of Peace focuses on individual and group responsibilities for
establishing nonviolence as an organizing principle in society. The
Department would focus on nonmilitary peaceful conflict resolutions, prevent
violence and promote justice and democratic principles to expand human
rights. Domestically, the Department would be responsible for developing
policies which address issues such as domestic violence, child abuse,
mistreatment of the elderly, and other issues of cultural violence.
Internationally, the Department would gather research, analyze foreign policy
and make recommendations to the President on how to address the root causes
of war and intervene before as or before they begin, while improving national
security, including the protection of human rights and the prevention and
de-escalation of unarmed and armed international conflict.

April 8th. Recruit as
many people as you can to attend this meeting with you. Doing this, we will
blanket the nation with meetings in support of the bill, both in DC and
beyond. Our goal is a meeting with every single member of Congress or members
of their staff so we need people from every Congressional district in the
country to come forward and help.

April 8th. Your job between now and April 8 is to make sure that everyone has
the name and phone and fax number of their Congressperson (easy to
find...visit, and to call them on April 7 to remind them to
make the call. It is a good idea for you to keep a list of the people who
have agreed to call and the needed numbers in case they misplace the contact

Between now and April 8, e-mail as many people as you can, giving them the
information about the Department of Peace lobbying effort. Ask them to help

Most importantly, FOLLOW UP. It is not enough to merely let people know that
the legislation is being introduced; our job is to lobby for it, so that it
passes. Congress is a reactive body, but if our Congress people do not hear
from us directly, then there is nothing for them to react to.

Revoke Presidential Authority to Wage War

Against all odds, there were enough signatures, e-mails telegrams and phone
calls within the last 24 hours to Congressman Dennis J. Kucinich of Ohio to
persuade him to introduce before the House of Representatives in Washington,
D.C. a little known resolution that deprives the President of his authority
to wage war, by returning war powers to Congress. However, we must now
persuade Speaker of the House Dennis Hastert that there is a growing
consensus if not a plurality to mandate the resolution for a House ballot.

Therefore, please take a moment to e-mail Speaker Hastert by simply saying,
"I am in favor of introducing HJ Resolution 20 for a vote."( See below.) And
then please follow up congress people and senators. Always include your
address or they will disregard the email. Speaker Hastert's e-mail:

Dear Speaker Dennis Hastert, I am in favor of introducing HJ Resolution 20

Stop The Domestic Security Enhancement Act Of 2003

Send A Free Fax To Both Senators And Your Congressperson In 2 Minutes

Under the guise of terrorism, Ashcroft has been secretly preparing new
legislation that would significantly reduce privacy protections and
essentially eliminate some of the most fundamental checks and balances on
governmental power.

The draft "Domestic Security Enhancement Act Of 2003" contains a multitude of
law enforcement and intelligence gathering powers -- many of which are not
related to terrorism -- that would severely undermine basic constitutional
rights. For example, the proposed legislation would allow the sampling and
cataloguing of innocent Americans' DNA without court order and without consent.

We can stop this legislation and tell our elected officials that they must
exercise appropriate oversight over the Justice Department and FBI to prevent
abuse of power.

Senator Daschle Fight Back & Filibuster Often

Control of the Senate will change in January, with reproductive rights,
environmental protection, the exercise of war powers, limiting corporate
corruption, and civil liberties taking the biggest hits. While the last year
has seen Senate Democrats block the worst proposed legislation, essentially
nothing good has passed. But now the special interests that funded the most
expensive midterm election in history want their payback, and it will be
deeply damaging.

It is past time for Senate liberals to get a backbone. Senate rules prevent
passage of essentially any legislation unless at least 60 senators vote in
favor. This means that a determined minority, one willing to use the rules
and to filibuster, can block the worst judicial appointments, drilling in the
Arctic Wildlife Refuge, and the permanent elimination of the estate tax. Such
senators will come under ferocious attack from the editorial pages of the
mainstream press, from the pundits of the right, and their colleagues in the
Senate. The only chance is if they hear overwhelmingly from the public that
this is the right thing to do.

Such senators need leadership. Contact Senate Majority leader Thomas Daschle
and urge him to stand up to the President's extreme agenda. Please see:

Dear Colleagues: [letter from Congressman Danny K. Davis]

I invite you to attend a "citizen's forum" I will be chairing this Friday,
October 11, in Rayburn 2360 from 10:30 a.m. until noon. This hearing will
bring together prominent religious leaders and other concerned citizens who
will raise their voice to express the nation's concern over the rush to war
with Iraq.

The New York Times reported on Saturday, "In religious circles, the antiwar
voices are vastly outnumbering those in favor of a war." Congress and the
President have largely chosen to ignore this consensus for peace while
simultaneously proclaiming themselves to be people of faith. This forum will
serve to remind our national leaders that notice is being taken of such
hypocrisy and we shall be judged accordingly.

Speakers will include:

*Rev. Dr. Bob Edgar, General Secretary of the National Council of Churches of
Christ and former Member of Congress;

*Arun Gandhi, Director of the Gandhi Institute, and grandson of Mahatma

*Rev. Jim Wallis, founder of the Call to Renewal and editor of Sojourners

*Rabbi Michael Lerner, editor of Tikkun magazine;

*Liliane Baxter, chair of the board of the Fellowship of Reconciliation, one
of the nation's oldest peace organizations;

*Father Joe Nangle, OFM of Pax Christi USA;

*Bishop Joe Gelinek, Episcopal Bishop of Minnesota;

*Mahdi Bray, Muslim American Freedom Foundation;

*Several United Methodist bishops;

*September 11 Families for Peaceful Tomorrows;

*Peter Lems, American Friends Service Committee;

*Sister Margaret Galiardi, OP, Dominican Order in North America;

*William Sinkford, Unitarian Universalists of America;

*Bishop Imagene B. Stewart, National President of the African American
Women's Clergy

*Ibrahim Abdil-Mu id Ramey, Fellowship of Reconciliation; Founding Member of
Muslim Peace Fellowship

I hope you will take time from your busy schedule to attend this important
event. Please contact Caleb Gilchrist of my staff at 5-5006 for more

Homeless Couple Who Protect Butterfly Habitat Face Eviction

San Mateo County is moving ahead with plans to remove Besh Serdahely and
Thelma Caballero, the former San Francisco street couple who live on San
Bruno Mountain, from their oak tree domicile.

I once visited their home with David Schooley, the founder of San Bruno
Mountain Watch, a conservation group protecting the habitat of endangered
species of butterflies on San Bruno. It was an incredible experience. Their
oak tree home and environs were spotless. According to David, Besh and
Thelma have been removing nonnative plants and creating more open space for
the rare and endangered mission blue and silverspot butterflies. Because of
their efforts, there is now no French broom or fennel in the canyons in and
around the home where this couple live. These nonnative species have been
pushing out the plants that these butterflies need for survival. They have
done more work removing nonnative species in those canyons than the San Mateo
Department of Parks and Recreation. Its time to stand up for butterflies and
the homeless couple who are helping to keep them from extinction.

I recently suggested to San Mateo Board of Supervisors President Jerry Hill
that he find a way to relax the rules or make this couple custodians or
caretakers of the land so they can stay. I also called Ron Weaver

There are other caretakers that live on county property in and around the San
Francisco Bay area. In a time of national turmoil and heartless politicians

people, it is all too easy to forget the problems of the homeless. In peace,

Tree house couple still on way out
County officials firm on removal of the 12-year Owl Canyon residents

BRISBANE -- San Mateo County is moving ahead with plans to remove Besh
Serdahely and Thelma Caballero, the former San Francisco street couple who
live on San Bruno Mountain, from their oak tree domicile.

The county served the pair with a 30-day eviction notice on Aug. 26. They
have lived in the arms of the oak for 12 years.

"We are very concerned about the welfare of these individuals,' said Mary
Burns, director of the county department of parks and recreation, but "the
law that we are operating under -- that you can't live on park property -- is
still in effect."

Only the County Board of Supervisors has the power to amend the law, and
board President Jerry Hill says Serdahely and Caballero have to go.

"I believe San Mateo County is acting responsibly on this," Hill said. "Where
do you draw the line? If you let one couple up there, you are inviting all
the homeless of San Francisco to live there."

Serdahely and Caballero are in apparent violation of health and fire codes,
because they compost their waste and burn fires for warmth and cooking,
county and state officials said.

The plight of the couple has received intense media scrutiny. As a result,
the county has received a large number of calls and e-mails, Burns said. The
majority of the messages have urged the county to allow the couple to stay.

But the publicity has likely torpedoed any possibility that the county might
relax its rules for the Serdahely and Caballero. An exception to the law
might lead to a squatters' invasion of county park lands, officials said.

David Schooley, founder of the San Bruno Mountain Watch environmental group,
and the couple's confidant, said he regrets the publicity. Mountain Watch
would have preferred to quietly lobby the county on the couple's behalf,
Schooley said.

Serdahely and Caballero have painstakingly removed invasive plant species
from Owl Canyon, where they live, bringing back the habitat of endangered
butterfly species, Schooley said. Serdahely's commitment to the environment
includes refusing to ride in automobiles.

Help Stop the War on Iraq

American public, or our allies.

Please join me in signing an online petition to oppose a war that would
likely undermine both national and world security. Let's show our
representatives that they have strong public support to stop this war.

If you join me in signing today, your comments will be hand-delivered to your

meetings are being organized with Senate offices everywhere.

It's important that we speak out against a war in which many of our young
people, and likely many more innocent Iraqis, would die.

Even top Republican leaders are publicly questioning a war:

Brent Scowcroft, the former National Security Advisor, says a U.S. invasion
of Iraq "could turn the whole region into a cauldron and, thus, destroy the
war on terrorism." He also says "there is scant evidence to tie Saddam to
terrorist organizations, and even less to the Sept. 11 attacks."

Senator Chuck Hagel (R-NE) says the CIA has "absolutely no evidence" that
Iraq possesses or will soon possess nuclear weapons.

Henry Kissinger says, "The notion of justified pre- emption runs counter to
modern international law, which sanctions the use of force in self-defense
only against actual -- not potential -- threats." Kissinger also says,
"American military intervention in Iraq would be supported only grudgingly,
if at all, by most European allies."

Dick Armey, the House Majority Leader (R-TX-26), says, "I don't believe that
America will justifiably make an unprovoked attack on another nation. It
would not be consistent with what we have been as a nation or what we should
be as a nation."

State Assembly where we anticipate significant opposition. Therefore, letters

As you well know, sacred sites have been continually used by our Spiritual
Leaders since time immemorial. These ecosystems are also home to an
incredible amount of biological diversity. However, many of these places of
prayer and species diversity have been destroyed and many others are facing
immediate threats of destruction via "development" by extractive industries.
The Quechan Tribe of Southern California, for example, is struggling to
protect one of their most sacred sites, Indian Pass, from being destroyed by
a proposed cyanide heap-leach gold mine. In Northern California, the Pit
River Tribe is working to protect the sacred Medicine Lake from geothermal
development. Many tribal peoples all throughout the State are fighting to
protect these lands, which are indispensable for the survival of cultural and
biological diversity.

For many years we have known that the only way to stop the relentless
destruction of our sacred places is with strong statutory protection. SB

Save Whales & Dolphins-Oppose LFA Sonar

Let Congress Know That You Oppose LFAS!

The National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS), at a Washington D.C. press
conference held July 15th, announced that the agency was issuing the official
"take authorizations" to the Navy for the deployment of LFA Sonar. These are
"small take" permits that enable the Navy to kill and harass whales and other
endangered species in the interest of implementing this deadly technology.
Let your Congressperson and Senators know that you don't agree with this
decision and want the Navy's LFAS program shut down. They also said that the
Navy could start using the sonar system in as much as 80 percent of the
world's oceans

Keep up the heat on Congress!

Call (202) 224-3121 for the Capitol
Switchboard, and asked to be connected to your Representative's office. Tell
them you want the Navy to stop their testing and deployment of LFA "Active"
Sonar which has already killed or injured many whales.

Cell Space Needs Your Support

As you may have heard, the police have visited Cellspace and prohibited
further production of large events until we can comply with city building and
fire codes.

We are NOT being shut down -- we still host lots of classes, rehearsals,
etc., and invite your increased participation. Rather, we are in the process
of upgrading, complying with code, and hosting events again soon, and we need
your help to do it! We need time & money to do the upgrades, and the closure
to events puts us in particular need because events have typically paid for
about 50% of our monthly rent. We have recently received facility
improvement grants from California Lawyers for the Arts, SF Art Commission,
and SF Grants for the Arts, (THANKS!) so we are on our way, but much more is
needed. As a volunteer-run organization, we are proud to say that grants will
be spent on building materials rather than salary or overhead. It is a time
of crisis, but also a time of great opportunity, and we are psyched about the
future: when we will be a fully legal community arts space! So please read
on about how you can help.

The recent police visits Cellspace has exclusively occurred at youth-based
events, both of which were well-managed and peaceful. This is a reminder
that there are few youth-oriented spaces out there, and many Mission youth
are feeling justifiably angry about feeling "targeted" by the authorities.
Cellspace provides a positive, creative environment for youth as well as
artists. Also, other art and performance spaces have been receiving police
attention, and venues like Cell are very difficult to find. It is more
important than ever that Cell get back on it's feet, so please do help!

Western Shoshone Alert

Decision on Senate Hearing Undermines Decades of U.S Indian Policy and
Represents Return to the Paternalistic and Genocidal PastSenate Committee on
Indian Affairs Reschedules Hearing on Western Shoshone Claims Distribution
Act for August 2nd, 2002.

With less than 12 business days notice, Western Shoshone communities have
learned that Senator Reid and the Senate Committee on Indian Affairs have
rescheduled a hearing on the Western Shoshone Claims Distribution Act (S958).
The legislation being promoted by Senator Reid was developed without the
consent or participation of either the Western Shoshone Federally recognized
Tribal Councils or the Traditional Government. The bill would provide a one
time individual cash payment to all Western Shoshone in compensation for the
extinguishment of title to their ancestral lands and all rights attached to
those lands.

In what can only be interpreted as an attempt to railroad this legislation
through committee without a full discussion of the issues at stake, Senator
Reid's staff have informed the Western Shoshone that only three
representatives chosen by Senator Reid himself will be invited to speak
before the committee. According to staff at the Senate Indian Committee, as
August 2nd is the last day of the session before recess, it is likely that
only the Chair (Senator Daniel Inouye) and Vice-Chair (Senator Ben
Nighthorse-Campbell) of the Senate Committee will be present for the hearing
along with Senator Reid. This is outrageous act of disrespect on the part of
Senator Reid and the Senate Committee on Indian Affairs, and an affront to
the many generations of Western Shoshone people who have struggled to have
their Treaty and rights respected.

Oppose AB1941 - the California "Anti-Rave Bill."

AB1941 passed the California Assembly on May 28th, 2002 with a 79-0 vote, and
is currently making its way through the State Senate.

The "California Anti-Rave Bill" could have a devastating impact on Late Night
Culture throughout the state by holding promoters liable for any drug abuse
or related harms experienced by patrons at events. If this law passes, it may
stop rave and electronic dance culture dead in its tracks as promoters are no
longer able to hold events because of the legal and criminal consequences.
This is like making baseball teams criminally liable if someone at a baseball
game drinks too much beer. This bill takes the burden of personal
responsibility off the shoulders of individuals and places it on the
shoulders of promoters. Instead of encouraging people to make safe, healthy,
informed choices, this legislation makes promoters responsible for all of it.

The San Francisco Late Night Coalition encourages you to act now to prevent
Bill AB1941 from becoming law!

How Will Bill AB1941 Affect San Francisco Late Night Culture?

- This Legislation would add new requirements to the already complex event
permitting process.

- Specifically targets events with electronic music, dancing and the
potential capacity of 500+ people.

- Requires promoters to be certified of their awareness of drug use and signs
of drug use at a party.

- Will hold promoters liable of any drug abuse or harms to their patrons.
Singles out Late Night Events for a higher level of scrutiny and a more
difficult permit process.

- Will make it harder to have outdoor events.

Genetic Engineering Alert

At last! Congress is currently considering five new bills that would ensure
proper labeling and regulation of genetically engineered foods. Please take
action today to support the passage of this legislation -- especially the
Right to Know Act (H.R. 4814), which would guarantee labeling of all
genetically engineered foods.

Congressman Dennis Kucinich (D-Ohio), a long-time supporter of Dr. John
Hagelin's work (see, has recently introduced five
bills in the U.S. House of Representatives that provide a comprehensive
regulatory framework for all genetically engineered plants, animals,
bacteria, and other organisms.

The five bills are:

* the Genetically Engineered Food Right to Know Act of 2002 (H.R. 4814)
* the Genetically Engineered Food Safety Act of 2002 (H.R. 4813)
* the Genetically Engineered Crop and Animal Farmer Protection Act of 2002
(H.R. 4812)
* the Genetically Engineered Organism Liability Act of 2002 (H.R. 4816)
* the Real Solutions to World Hunger Act of 2002 (H.R. 4815)

Together, these bills address all the concerns about genetically engineered
foods that the Natural Law Party has been voicing for the past decade. In
short, these bills would:

* require food companies to label all foods containing ingredients from
genetically engineered plants or animals;

* improve the Food and Drug Administration's (FDA) oversight and testing of
transgenic foods;

* better protect farmers and ranchers against powerful biotech companies and
restore farmers' traditional right to save seed;

* clarify and reform liability and other legal issues associated with
genetically modified crops and foods; and

* expand research to help developing nations better feed themselves.

Protect Old Growth Forests

Thursday Senator Don Perata (D-Oakland) introduced State Constitutional
Amendment (SCA) 17. The bill calls for the people of California to be given
the opportunity to vote on passage of the Heritage Tree Preservation Act.

The Heritage Tree Preservation Act prohibits cutting or significant harm to
heritage trees in California. Heritage trees are trees on forestlands that
were alive in 1850, the year California became a state,
and that meet certain minimum diameter requirements.

Please contact your state assemblyperson and senator. Ask him/her to
coauthor SCA 17.

BLM Seizes Western Shoshone Livestock

On Friday morning May 24th, 2002 before sunrise armed BLM agents assisted by
several Nevada State officials raided the tribal grazing allotment of the
South Fork Reservation and seized 136 head of cows belonging to Western
Shoshone ranchers, including Raymond Yowell, Chief of the Western Shoshone
National Council. We are asking for your immediate assistance in expressing
the public's outrage at this clear violation of Western Shoshone rights and
the 1863 Treaty of Peace and Friendship signed at Ruby Valley! Other Western
Shoshone livestock under the care of Mary and Carrie Dann remain at large
grazing upon Shoshone land in the Crescent Valley area. These will most
likely be the next target of BLM confiscation.

Butterfly Needs Protection

The Carson wandering skipper butterfly received an emergency listing as an
endangered species in November 2001 because of a listing petition by the
Xerces Society, and a negotiated settlement between the U.S. Fish & Wildlife
Service and the Center for Biological Diversity. The Service has proposed to
make the listing permanent, but is being opposed by Lassen County where the
butterfly resides. A new comment period has been initiated to allow the
county and others to voice their opinion.

The Carson wandering skipper is currently known from only two populations,
one in Washoe County, Nevada, and the other in Lassen County, California.
There was another population near Carson City, Nevada, which recently was
lost due to development activities at the site. According to two reports
authored by Peter Brussard, a professor at University of Nevada, Reno, the
butterfly is at tremendous risk of extinction at its two remaining sites due
to livestock grazing, off road vehicle activity, encroaching development,
changes in the water table, and pesticide drift.

Please write a letter today, supporting complete Endangered Species Act
protection for the Carson wandering skipper. The comment period closes June
6. If you choose to write an email, please write "Carson wandering skipper
Endangered Species listing" in the subject line.

Robert D. Williams
U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service
1340 Financial Boulevard, Suite 234,
Reno, Nevada 89502

Sample letter:

Dear Mr. Williams:

Thank you and the Fish and Wildlife Service for your emergency listing action
for the Carson Wandering Skipper, Pseudocopaeodes eunus obscurus. We support
formal listing of this species under the Endangered Species Act.

The Carson wandering skipper is currently known from only two populations,
one in Washoe County, Nevada, and one in Lassen County, California. Two
recent reports by Peter F. Brussard clearly show that the current status of
the butterfly warrants an Endangered Species listing and all the protection
that would provide. Extinction of this butterfly could occur from naturally
occurring events or other threats due to the small, isolated nature of the
remaining populations. The sites where viable populations are still found are
at risk due to livestock grazing, OHV activity, encroaching development,
changes in the water table and pesticide drift.

I believe the Carson wandering skipper should get full protection under the
Endangered Species Act and a recovery plan should be developed that will
recover the species. Critical habitat should also be designated for
protection of the species.

Stop Government-approved Policeware

The acronym stands for "Consumer Broadband and Digital Television Promotion

The law would force all new personal computers and digital home entertainment

This policeware would restrict your use of copyrighted material on these

privacy of their own home or business, would also face five years in the

Since alternative operating systems like Linux and FreeBSD would most likely
refuse to incorporate government policeware into their code, users of these
open-source systems would also be eligible for hard time.

If we have any hope of keeping government policeware off of our personal
computers and home entertainment devices, we must act quickly and decisively.

For starters, you can sign our petition opposing the CBDTPA, contact your

Letter to End All War

Last week George W. Bush revealed his "nuclear posture." He requested money
to fund a new nuclear weapons program, and he asserted his willingness to use
nuclear weapons if necessary in the next stage of the war on terrorism, an
attack on Iraq.

This month, in an act of singular timeliness, Dr. Helen Caldicott released
her new book, The New Nuclear Danger: George W. Bush's Military-Industrial
Complex. Caldicott, as you may know, has dedicated her life to preventing
nuclear war. A pediatrician from Australia, she gave up her position at
Harvard to carry on the work of the organization she founded, Physcians for
Social Responsibility. In her updated introduction, she begins:

On September 11, before much of the world was even aware of what had happened
in New York, Washington and Pennsylvania, the Bush administration had raised
the country's nuclear alert codes from defcon 6 to defcon 2 -- the highest
state of alert before the launch code is operable. Russian, the country with
the second largest nuclear arsenal in the world, almost certainly responded
in kind. As a result, thousands of nuclear weapns stood poised on
hair-trigger alert, ready to be launched by the president of either country
with a decision time of just three minutes. The intercontinental
nuclear-armed ballistic missiles controlled by these cods have a
thirty-minute transit time from Russia to America or vice versa. They cannot
be recalled. And they pose an ever-present threat of global nuclear holocaust.

Also this month we learned that a "shadow government" was installed as early
as October in two underground "bunkers" on the East Coast, making it
immediately clear that America is preparing for the possibility of nuclear

It cannot happen. But if we do nothing to stop it, it's going to happen
sooner or later -- maybe by April or May.

Who can stop it if not the women of this country and the men who support
them? As women we know the value of a human life. As mothers, we have never
wanted lose our children to war. Surely it is up to us to call a halt to this
murder. But what can we do?

During the past few weeks, I have committed myself to coming up with some way
to effectively express my objections to current policy. I have had several
ideas, but they all take time to implement. And there is no more time.

Tonight I went with my friend Sue Ann to see the marvellous movie, Monsoon
Wedding. It is just a delicious treat, two hours at the great banquet of
life, with all the lunacy and nobility of the human drama, the kind of movie
that brings tears to one's eyes and belly-fulls of laughter to one's throat,
in awe of the miracle which embraces us at all times.

We cannot allow its destruction! Leaving the theater, I thought, I will go
and sit on the lawn in front of the White House until I am permitted to see
the President. And when I see him, I will tell him, There has got to be
another way.

I know there is, and so do you. I know that terrorism can be resolved by the
united efforts of the governments of the world to act as they have been
mandated to do: to protect and provide for the needs of the people.

Violence can be met without violence. Bloodshed can be countered by
determination. Conflict can be resolved by the power of knowledge. Agreements
can be made and achieved. There are enough resources on this planet to
provide for every single woman, man and child on the planet, all six and a
half billion. If only it were fairly distributed!

I am willing to go sit in front of the White House, but I can't do it alone.
And I can't do it tonight. I have a job to go to, a family to care for, pets
to feed.

But I can write letters.

So I have decided to write letters to the White House every single day,
beginning with a letter to the First Lady. I have decided to choose words
that will create a basis of agreement between us, rather than words which
divide. I believe that there is one truth to which we all ultimately
subscribe, regardless of how we choose to frame it. Love is the foundation on
which that great truth resides, and it overrides all the divisions we have
put in its way.

I wrote my first letter tonight, and I have attached it to this message. I
ask you to join me. We can flood the White House with our letters and prayers
and pleas for a stop to the suicide mission our government has proposed to
inflict on us all.

Please feel free to send my letter if you like it, adding your words and
signature. Better yet, write your own. Send it by mail, since letters are
more substantial and effective than e-mails. Forward this e-mail to everyone
on your list. And let's keep those cards and letters coming, until this
cataclysm is averted once and for all.

There's plenty to do after that, to rescue, restore and rebuild our world.

Ever in Her divine service,
Stephanie Hiller

Nuclear Posture Review Alert

Please write to your representatives to insist that the Nuclear Posture
Review be reviewed. As the New York Times stated, " Mr. Bush needs to send
that document back to its authors and ask for a new version less menacing to
the security of future American generations." Its up to us to ask our elected

America as Nuclear Rogue

New York Times Editorial
March 12, 2002

If another country were planning to develop a new nuclear weapon and
contemplating pre-emptive strikes against a list of non-nuclear powers,
Washington would rightly label that nation a dangerous rogue state. Yet such
is the course recommended to President Bush by a new Pentagon planning paper
that became public last weekend. Mr. Bush needs to send that document back to
its authors and ask for a new version less menacing to the security of future
American generations.

The paper, the Nuclear Posture Review, proposes lowering the overall number
of nuclear warheads, but widens the circumstances thought to justify a
possible nuclear response and expands the list of countries considered
potential nuclear targets. It envisions, for example, an American president
threatening nuclear retaliation in case of "an Iraqi attack on Israel or its
neighbors, or a North Korean attack on South Korea or a military
confrontation over the status of Taiwan."

In a world where numerous countries are developing nuclear, biological and
chemical weapons, it is quite right that America retain a credible nuclear
deterrent. Where the Pentagon review goes very wrong is in lowering the
threshold for using nuclear weapons and in undermining the effectiveness of
the Nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty.

The treaty, long America's main tool for discouraging non-nuclear countries
from developing nuclear weapons, is backed by promises that as long as
signatories stay non-nuclear and avoid combat alongside a nuclear ally, they
will not be attacked with nuclear weapons. If the Pentagon proposals become
American policy, that promise would be withdrawn and countries could conclude
that they have no motive to stay non-nuclear. In fact, they may well decide
they need nuclear weapons to avoid nuclear attack.

The review also calls for the United States to develop a new nuclear warhead
designed to blow up deep underground bunkers. Adding a new weapon to
America's nuclear arsenal would normally require a resumption of nuclear
testing, ending the voluntary moratorium on such tests that now helps
restrain the nuclear weapons programs of countries like North Korea and Iran.

Since the dawn of the nuclear age, American military planners have had to
factor these enormously destructive weapons into their calculations. Their
behavior has been tempered by the belief, shared by most thoughtful
Americans, that the weapons should be used only when the nation's most basic
interest or national survival is at risk, and that the unrestrained use of
nuclear weapons in war could end life on earth as we know it. Nuclear weapons
are not just another part of the military arsenal. They are different, and
lowering the threshold for their use is reckless folly.

Block Oil Drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge

I just today learned the biggest environmental policy drama in a decade is
now nearing its peak: the senate has just begun its debate on energy policy.

Enron and other giant corporations have already forced a disastrous energy
bill through the house, with the support of the white house.

The senate is our only chance to stop them. If you are concerned about these
issues, I enthusiastically encourage you to take a couple of minutes and call
both of your senators (I was on hold less than a minute at Senator Boxer's
office and less than ten seconds at Senator Feinstein's).

Senator Barbara Boxer
DC Phone: 202-224-3553, DC Fax: 415-956-6701, Local Phone: 415-403-0100

Senator Dianne Feinstein
DC Phone: 202-224-3841, DC Fax: 202-228-3954, Local Phone: 619-231-9712

Make sure the staffer who speaks to you knows you're a constituent. Then
urge them specifically to:

Please support the Kerry-Hollings CAFE bill; support the Jeffords Renewable
Energy bill; and block oil drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge.

The kerry-hollings "CAFE" bill would increase the fuel economy of new cars
and light trucks to an average of 35 miles per gallon by 2013 (CAFE stands
for "Corporate Average Fuel Economy"). This will save as much oil as we
import from Iraq and Kuwait combined. It's the single biggest, fastest step
we can take to reduce our dependence on oil, a crucial goal for our national
security, our economy, and our environment.

The Jeffords Renewable Energy bill will help move America toward a
sustainable energy future, by requiring that 20% of our energy be generated
from renewable sources by the year 2020.

Drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge is just plain wrong. The
Refuge is the intact heart of the last great wilderness ecosystem in North
America. It contains only enough oil to last the United States 6 months, and
that would take 10 years to come online. President Bush, Vice President
Cheney, and their friends in the energy business are determined to drill it.
But once it's gone, it's gone forever.

Please make your calls right away. it really only takes a couple of minutes -
and it feels good to take some action. Please make your voice heard!

From: (benjamin):

Offshore Oil Drilling Alert

In response to the federal government's threat to coastal waters and Alaskan
wilderness, the COMMITTEE AGAINST OIL EXPLORATION is organizing campaigns to
protect the ecosystem and promote serious conservation of energy.

George Bush and Co. are trying to drill the ARCTIC NATIONAL WILDLIFE REFUGE
for oil. There's opposition, but a filibuster isn't much to count on over

Oil from ANWR is ridiculous from the oil security and environmental
standpoints. The government is ALSO trying to drill more oil off the COASTS
OF CALIFORNIA and in THE GULF OF MEXICO. These areas will not offer energy
security either, but they will pollute tremendously as always - not just when
there are accidental spills.

Sustainable Energy Institute and Culture Change magazine are bringing
together grassroots activists to help them nationally. We hope you'll be a
part of the Committee Against Oil Exploration (CAOE). In addition to writing
the usual letters to officials and newspapers, we advocate specific forms of
action for individuals in communities everywhere - see our new webpage for
CAOE ("K-O") and its direct-action forum for ideas on calling attention to
oil gluttony and saving wild areas from development:

I will keep up the interviews on oil, transportation, petro-agriculture and
sustainable living. Culture Change magazine will keep highlighting oil
schemes and pointing out solutions to today's non-conservation of energy.
The public wants peace and an end to out of control greenhouse-gas emissions,
so we address the consumer economy's dependence on war-making for "oil
security." Thanks for checking out our work and being supportive.

Tree-Sit Uprising in Humboldt County!

A new round of Tree-sitting protests have begun on Pacific Lumber property at
Grizzly Cr. where some of the largest unprotected old growth redwoods are on
the chopping block. A new group of activists have emerged out of the Pacific
Northwest calling themselves "The Natural Guard". They have come to Humboldt
County CA to protect our common natural heritage, the ancient trees of the
redwood rainforest.

The Natural Guard have set up a tree-village in an enormous (24 ft diameter)
redwood. The platform is 220 feet up in a tree called Zen and is connected
with a traverse to another tree (named Merlin) next to it, which is also
occupied with a platform. More platforms are planned and more tree-sitters
and ground support are needed immediately! Anyone who has experience with
tree-sits or is willing to learn, is invited to Humboldt to help out. This is
a serious matter. Please no slackers! We need hard working dedicated,
enthusiastic eco-warriors who don't mind carrying heavy loads up steep hills
or riding through a windy, wet storm in the high canopy.

The Natural Guard is in solidarity with Earth First! who also have 2 other
new tree-sits nearby on Gypsy Mountain, named after David "Gypsy" Chain who
was killed by an angry logger who felled a redwood tree on him here in 1998.
the clearcuts that Gypsy was trying to prevent are surrounded by two large
patches of old forest where the two new tree-sits are active. The trees are
named Iradia and Isis. Iradia was the same tree that was occupied at the time
of Gypsy's death, but was never cut. Now they are coming for it with their
chainsaws and helicopters and the state and federal government have given
Pacific lumber the greenlight to eliminate these last bits of old growth.

If you thought the struggle was over and the last giants were all either
protected or already cut, think again! These Trees are irreplaceable,
ecological remnants of a rainforest that has stood since the days of
dinosaurs 140 million years ago. Less than 4% of the ancient redwoods are
still standing and the species that rely on them are going extinct!

Please do not let this happen in your lifetime without helping out and rising
up against it. We need help! NOW!!!!!!!!

Nuclear Testing Action Alert

US declares love for nuclear weapons by planning Valentines Day subcritical
test in Nevada

Take Action for Nuclear Abolition!

Dear Friends,

We received confirmed information from our colleagues in Nevada and
California that the Department of Energy's National Nuclear Security
Administration has conducted an underground subcritical nuclear weapons test
code named "Vito". The explosion took place at noon on Valentines Day,
Thursday, February 14, 2001 at the Nevada Test Site.

This nuclear weapons experiment is carried out by Los Alamos National Lab.
Scientists from the UK will participate in thistest "...under the terms of
the 1958 Mutual Defense Agreement," This shows that the U.S. is helping
Britain with nuclear weapons development. For more information on subcritical
nuclear weapons tests visit our web page at

Please join us in taking action for nuclear abolition by calling or writing
President Bush demanding that these subcritical tests and all future plans to
resume full scale nuclear weapons be canceled. Tell him the time is now for
Nuclear Abolition! Organize vigils or demonstrations in your town or city.
Look below for more ideas.

700 Acres of the Largest Redwoods Under Siege

Over the last few years, I have contacted some of you to join in stopping a
particularly horrible act of aggression against the Earth and her greater
family. Such was the case with organizing swimmers to block the
sound-blasting of humpback whales in early 1998 as part of a Navy test of
their Low-Frequency Active Sonar (LFAS) and with recruiting 240 volunteers to
don sea turtle costumes and hit the streets of Seattle to block the meetings
of the World Trade Organization.

This alert is even more urgent and your participation even more critical. One
of the greatest natural treasures on Earth is in imminent danger and will be
destroyed if enough people do now find it in their hearts to respond and
respond now.

The federal and state government are at this moment releasing a letter to
Pacific Lumber Company (PALCO) of Humboldt County, California that allows
them to begin cutting seven hundred acres of the largest unprotected redwoods
in the world. Called the E stands, these are the best unprotected trees of
the 211,000 acres PALCO owns, the creme de la creme: trees 15' in diameter,
some over 2000 years old, some groves perfect, unentered, no stumps- the
forest primeval.

Even though the trees are known habitat for the marbled murrelet and other
endangered creatures, PALCO is being allowed to cut these stands under the
deal struck for the Headwaters about three years ago. Progressive-sounding
"habitat conservation plans" or HCP's create loopholes in the Endangered
Species Act and give the company permission to destroy hundreds of marbled
murrelets even though their population is crashing in California. Any cutting
of trees must be suspended when the murrelets come back to roost in the trees
on March 24. So the chainsaws and bulldozers are rushing to cut and drag
these monarchs as fast as possible.

For dealing with this and other assaults on our sacred Earth, we have banded
together into a new all-volunteer organization called the Natural Guard. The
idea is that we organize to protect life in our home towns- whether the
threat is chemicals in our bloodstreams, opposing war, or the destruction of
forests and rivers. We recruit our friends and families to join in the
"reserves" to be called up when needed. Our approach is to fight like water-
tenacious and non-violent opposition to the infliction of violence to
families and the Earth.

This particular fight brings every element of our current struggle on Earth
into focus: an irreplaceable natural treasure about to be destroyed, a
corporate villain bent on cutting and running, state and federal governments
happy to craft a deal if you have enough money and lawyers, laws circumvented
and sheer brutality used to curtail dissent. Humboldt County Sheriffs have
used pepper spray in the eyes and pain compliance holds to torture forest
defenders into surrendering. One of the unentered groves about to be cut is
just up the hill from where David Gypsy Chain was murdered by a PALCO logger
a couple of years ago.

This is the culmination of a seventeen-year old fight for the ancient
redwoods of California, ever since corporate raider Charles Hurwitz staged a
hostile takeover of Pacific Lumber Company with the help of the infamous
Michael Miliken and Ivan Boesky. He immediately raided their pension fund,
more than doubled the cut of timber, instituted clear-cut logging and the
subsequent dousing of the denuded land with herbicide mixed with diesel fuel.
Just before Christmas he closed the 104 year-old mill in the company town of
Scotia, not only taking jobs away from those who worked there but their homes
as well. Now, having silted the rivers, poisoned the fish, shattered the
forests, and destroyed the economic base of Humboldt County, Hurwitz is
preparing to announce bankruptcy for PALCO and take his millions back to

Some say that the destruction of these ancient forests is a done deal and
that any opposition will be futile. Maybe so. The forests are on PALCO's
private property. Both federal and state permits have been issued. Stopping
the logging by climbing the trees and setting up platforms to live on is
exceedingly difficult- often the first branch is 150' up.

Many of us, however, do not see how we can sit and watch TV while the last of
the biggest trees on Earth and the creatures that depend on them are wiped
out. So we are mobilizing. We are calling on everyone who cares to join us at
either Grizzly Creek or Swimmer's Delight campgrounds from now until March 24
to do everything peaceful in our power to stop this cutting. These
campgrounds are located 12 and 17 miles east on route 36 from the Fortuna
junction of 101. We are setting up a kitchen and training in tree climbing
and survival techniques. We hope to make a strong enough stand to buy time
for these trees and the life they hold. A California referendum is pending
that would ban the cutting of old growth trees, of which barely 3 percent

To you now reading these words- I call on you. Come on down and join us.
Bring what skills you have- even if you are not prepared to get arrested or
climb trees, we badly need support people. Come with enough camping gear and
clothing to live in the woods for a month. Our goal is to put a peaceful army
of 1,000 souls in tree villages over the next month and stop these trees from
falling. For those of you who have volunteered before to join others in
defending the Earth, you know that there is precious little else that brings
such joy.

Don't come out of obligation. Do it for yourself, to refuse to acquiesce
in your heart to the surrender of the wild and wonderful. Be the revolution.
This is your wake-up call. Your presence is urgently requested.

What do we need? Just about everything, including:

Doctors Riggers Cooks
Survival Experts Lawyers media contacts
Funding Ropes cameras
tents climbing saddles cargo nets
tarps musicians food
warm clothes an office
raingear a camper
propane stoves helmets You

See you there. Please send this alert far and wide.

Resumption of Nuclear Testing Is Not an Option

The Bush Administration is considering an expedited plan to resume nuclear
weapons testing.

A return to testing nuclear weapons would not only defy U.S. obligations
under the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, but experts say it could bring
about a new nuclear arms race and destroy the fragile nuclear disarmament and
non- proliferation agreements negotiated in the last decade.

Please send a letter to your Congressional members encouraging them to
support an effort that is underway, led by Representative Markey from
Massachusetts, to let President Bush know that a resumption of nuclear
testing is not an option. Encourage your Congressional members to tell
President Bush that at this crucial time in world history, our nation needs a
leader who will work diligently to help eliminate, not encourage, the threat
of nuclear weapons.

FBI's Old Black Magic / Another Step Closer to Big Brother

Message from Harold Covington" <>

Knock, knock.
Who's there?
The FBI.
The FBI who?
The FBI who is working on a way to gain remote access to everything you type
on your computer so we won't have to say 'knock, knock' in the future.

In mid-December, the FBI made a startling announcement that received scant
attention. A spokesman for the bureau acknowledged it was developing a
controversial Internet spying software -- codenamed Magic Lantern -- that
supposedly can surreptitiously enter an individual's personal computer,
record every keystroke, and zap all this data back to the G-men and G-women.
Presto, the data-snoops at the bureau would have the target's computer
passwords, the texts and addresses of all the emails written by him or her
(even those angry emails drafted but never sent), a record of all the
Internet traveling he or she did, copies of snail-mail correspondence, the
contents of any diary kept, to-do lists, on-line banking information, memos,
you-name-it -- anything typed into the computer, even if it were immediately
deleted or trashed.

For weeks, rumors of this computer-search software had been buzzing
throughout tech circles. In November, MSNBC first reported the FBI was
developing a computer "virus" that would install "keylogging software" on a
suspect's machine. But the bureau would neither confirm nor deny. Several
software companies were asked by reporters if they were cooperating with the
FBI by rigging their anti-virus detection programs to ignore Magic Lantern.
Some firms offered conflicting replies;eventually all said they were not in
league with the government. Then finally a bureau official named Paul Bresson
publicly confirmed Magic Lantern was no illusion. "It's a workbench project"
that has not yet been used, he told Reuters. And that was all he would reveal.

Magic Lantern would not entail a dramatic technological advance. As
notes, "several hacking tools, the two most popular being Back Orifice and
SubSeven, allow full control over a remote PC infected by the program,
including keystroke logging." Still, it is a momentous law enforcement

The software was born out of FBI frustration. In recent years, the electronic
eavesdroppers of the bureau have been bedeviled by widely-available
encryption programs. If the FBI gets a warrant to intercept the Internet
communications of a suspect, it is screwed if that data has been encrypted,
for the bureau does not have the resources to crack these codes. It would be
much easier to obtain the passwords used by a target and with those in hand
de-encrypt the information. In at least one known case, the feds, using a
search warrant, gained physical access to the computer of an alleged loan
shark and gangster who had utilized encryption to scramble information on his
hard drive. The bureau planted keystroke-detection technology on the
computer, uncovered his password and collected evidence against him. (In
court, the FBI adamantly refused to disclose the specifics of its
keystroke-snatching technology.) Magic Lantern would replace the need for a
black-bag job. Instead of agents breaking into a home or office to attach a
keystroke logger, the software would creep in, perhaps via an email that
seems to come from a friend, and silently penetrate the computer.

With Magic Lantern, the FBI would move beyond its controversial Carnivore
system, which is installed at an Internet service provider, reviews the data
stream, and picks out email and web visits of specific account holders.
Carnivore is like a policeman at a speed trap watching for suspected
speeders. Magic Lantern is a cop who sneaks into the backseat of the car of a
suspect and, unbeknown to the driver, rides along.

So there's a problem with this? Possibly. Magic Lantern could too easily lead
to overly broad searches. Though its grail may be encryption passwords,
agents will be able to snag anything typed on a keyboard. (The FBI in the
days of old used to love to obtain the discarded typewriter ribbons of
suspected criminals or commies. With the ribbons in hand, the bureau could
read whatever had been written on the suspect's typewriter.) Viewers of The
Sopranos might recall the episodes in which FBI agents wiretapped Tony's
home. As is often the case, they were not allowed to record everything that
went on in the house. The FBI team could only roll tape when it was clear T.
was talking about illicit enterprises. That is because wiretaps are supposed
to be narrowly aimed, not used like a Hoover (pun intended). Magic Lantern
could end up being much too powerful a snoop.

"Because the tool involves covert installation of software on someone's PC
with no physical intervention, it could conceivably allow law enforcement to
circumvent wiretapping restrictions, " Alex Salkever writes on Business Week
Online. David Sobel, general counsel for the Electronic Privacy Information
Center complains, "We don't know what this is capable of." Will this software
be open-source? asks Lee Tien, a senior attorney for the Electronic Frontier
Foundation. If it is not, the public will not have a clear picture of its
capabilities. (Don't bet on the FBI opening such a potent weapon to
scrutiny.) The public may not even know when Magic Lantern is up and running,
assuming the bureau's high tech wizards succeed. Perhaps it already is. And
here's a scary thought: what if Magic Lantern fell into the wrong hands? Or
what if the FBI's development and use of a particular software helped or
encouraged corporations, individuals, or other governments (say, Beijing) to
produce and exploit similar software? Who knows who will be slipping in and
out of your computer.

In the Ashcroft era, it is easy to lose sight of a fundamental principle: not
every government invasion of privacy has to be accepted, even if the
government claims each one is a necessary tool for fightingthe "evil ones."
But when a war is under way, civil liberties tend to be trumped by national
security concerns, real or imagined. For those who fret about Magic Lantern,
the trendline is not encouraging. The USA Patriot Act, quickly passed by
Congress in October, included a provision that made it easier for the FBI to
unleash Carnivore. The legislation allows agents to install it without
petitioning a judge for a warrant, as long as they get an okay from a U.S. or
state attorney general.

With a war on -- so to speak -- Magic Lantern is not shining brightly on many
radar screens. But it is a step toward Big Brotherhood that warrants
reflection and debate before this software magic becomes mundane.

Be ever watchful and write your Congressman.

Redwoods Ancient Forest Alert

The biggest unprotected trees in the world are slated to fall by March 24, 2002

Please help Save the Last of the Redwoods

Under the Headwaters deal, Charles Hurwitz' Pacific Lumber (PALCO) was
permitted to destroy habitat of the endangered marbled murrelet. Murrelets
only nest in old growth. Their numbers are plummeting at 13% per year and
could be extinct in California in 6 years. Their habitat is graded A through
E. The E stands include the biggest trees and best habitat. PALCO has already
cut the A through D sections and has now asked for final permission to begin
falling the E sections. These are the crème de la crème: trees 15' in
diameter, some groves never entered- no stumps, perfect: the forest primeval.
All in all, the seven E sections comprise 6-700 acres of the finest redwoods
on Earth. PALCO wants to level them all over the next three months.

Please act now and write:

Amidee Brickey - US Fish and Wildlife, 1655 Heindon Road, Arcata, California,

Don Koch- California Department of Fish and Game, 601 Locust St. Redding, Ca.

Ask them not to send out the final letters allowing PALCO to cut the E stands.

The Habitat Conservation Plans that allow PALCO to kill marbled murrelets are
based on old data. Since the deal was struck, unforeseen circumstances have
arisen: two oil spills that killed marbled murrelets. We are asking that all
cutting stop until a new tally of abundance is considered.

It is well worth the download time to watch this version of Pesident Bush's
State of the Union Address... the one we wish he would have given.

Contract with the Planet: from Ben Cohen (co-founder: Ben & Jerry's)

The following is a message from Ben Cohen, Co-founder of Ben & Jerry's,

Dear friend,

Well, I must say, I've been worried about President Bush's State of the Union
Message. I mean, after what this country's been through lately we all hope
that his speech will be filled with the kind of big ideas we need to be safe
and strong. But what if Bush chickens out and just talks about more guns,
more oil drilling, and more help for big corporations as the plan for our
nation's future? Aren't we ready for something better than business as usual?

But today I got some good news that I wanted to share with you. A friend
secretly videotaped President Bush's practice sessions for the State of the
Union Message. It's amazing, I think he's seen the light. Just click this

When the show is over you can share the good news with all your friends and

He said. They came. He pushed them ... and they flew.

Guillaume Apollinaire (1880-1918) French novelist, critic

The butterfly . . . Resting upon the temple bell, Asleep.

When we pay attention to nature's music, we find that everything on Earth
contributes to its harmony.

Hazrat Inayat Khan

Happiness is a butterfly, which, when pursued, is always just beyond your
grasp, but which, if you will sit down quietly, may alight upon you.

Nathaniel Hawthorne

Could we have a genetically based affinity for butterflies, which are the
most salient demonstrations of metamorphosis present in the environments where
humans have evolved? If genetically encoded, does the expression of this image
require an environmental trigger? Could the archetype remain latent, within
our subconscious mind, until some element in our immediate environment call it

Cultures of Habit by Gary Paul Nabhan

Like butterflies opening their wings to express their fragile beauty, we are learning to open our hearts to express our love and compassion. The world
will be made anew when all humans are accepted as brothers and sisters of the
human family, joining as One to heal the scars of the past and create a better
world for all living, sentient beings on Earth.

Jean Hudon-Earth Rainbow Network

If you took all the politicians in the world, put them in rocket, and sent
them to the moon, everyone would get along fine.

Buckminster Fuller

From ~ Surviving: the Best Game on Earth by Norie Huddle (the author of Butterfly)

. . . Until one is committed there is hesitancy, the chance to draw back, always ineffectiveness. Concerning all acts of initiative (and Creation), there is one elementary truth, the ignorance of which kills countless ideas and splendid plans: that the moment one definitely commits oneself, then Providence moves too. All sorts of things occur to help one that never would have otherwise occurred. A whole stream of events issues from the decision, rising in one's favor all manner of unforeseen incidents and meetings and material assistance, which no man could have dreamt would have come his way. I have learned a deep respect for one of Goethe's couplets:

Whatever you can do, or dream you can, begin it.
Boldness has genius, power, and magic in it.

                                  W.H. Murray

Indeed, the ideas and the visions we now produce could be the butterflies of the ultimate decade. It is up to each of us to flap our wings and to make use of the chaos of our times to launch our bifurcating societies along the humanistic path.

A human being is part of the whole, called by us 'Universe,' a part limited in time and space. He experiences himself, his thoughts and feelings as something separated from the rest -- a kind of optical delusion of his consciousness. This delusion is a kind of prison for us, restricting us to our personal desires and to affection for a few persons nearest to us. Our task must be to free ourselves from this prison by widening our circle of compassion to embrace all living creatures and the whole nature in its beauty. Nobody is able to achieve this completely, but the striving for such achievement is in itself a part of the liberation, and a foundation for inner security.....

Albert Einstein

The pure love of one person can offset the hatred of thousands.

Mahatma Gandhi

To change the world, we must bring forth the butterflies of hope from the
cocoons of ignorance and apathy that surrounds them. The best place to begin is
with ourselves. We must emerge from our own cocoons as positive agents of change.

David Krieger, Nuclear Age Peace Foundation

Beauty seems to be an intrinsic part of nature, and perhaps even the
organizing principle of reality. Scientists, in testing their theories, invariably
find that the simplest, most elegant, most beautiful equation, is the correct
one. Rainbows, butterflies, and the periodic table are some examples of
intrinsic beauty. The world will be saved by beauty.

"The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated."

"It isn't pollution that's harming the environment. It's the impurities in
our air and water that are doing it."

...Governor George W. Bush, Jr.

"People that are really very weird can get into sensitive positions and have a tremendous impact on history."

...Governor George W. Bush, Jr.

A miraculous event has occured! It seems that from out of the dream has come proof of the dreamer.

"To laugh often and much, to win the respect of intelligent people and the affection of children, to earn the appreciation of honest critics and endure the betrayal of false friends, to appreciate beauty, to find the best in others, to leave the world a bit better, whether by a healthy child, a garden patch... to know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived. This is to have succeeded!"

"What the caterpillar calls the end of the world,
    the master calls a butterfly."

- Richard Bach

One who is willing to give one's body for the Earth, and do so with love, is
the only one fit to be steward of the Earth.

- Lao Tzu

Art is not a mirror to reflect reality,
but a hammer with which to shape it.

- Bertol Brecht

The world is a dangerous place, not because of those who do evil, but
because of those who look on and do nothing. Nothing that I can do will change the structure of the universe. But maybe by raising my voice I can help the
greatest of all causes ... goodwill among men and peace on earth.
